The extent of my Christmas shopping

December 20, 2009

The Negress remains unemployed with a couple of close calls upping the frustration quotient. However, she decided, for the most part, not to exchange presents. She will make a stab a returning the Christmas cards she received, but there is much else to be done. Her own well-being was secured with a timely purchase made in New Jersey to stock the wine cellar for many of the coming months.

Here’s how that went:
12 bottles 2007 Can Blau
12 bottles 2007 Casa Lapostolle Cabernet Sauvignon
12 bottles 2008 Lapostolle Sauvignon Blanc
6 bottles 2008 Yalumba Viognier Y Series
6 bottles 2006 Vina Zaco Rioja
6 bottles 2007 Trimbach Riesling
6 bottles 2009 Crios De Susana Balbo Malbec Rose
3 bottles Casteller Cava Rose NV
3 bottles La Marca Prosecco di Conegliano Valdobbiadene NV

What this list contains is some of my favorite solid citizens of the wine world — enjoyable, intermittently surprising and suitable for may occasions. The circumstances of how I came to get them is best left shrouded in mystery since I was informed loudly by a woman  that interstate transport of wine remains illegal if you are not a distributor.  Hypothetically, I suspect it happens all the time. So far the Negress has enjoyed some of the Malbec Rose (dry and rich) and quite a bit of the Casa Sauvignon Blanc and the Yalumba Viognier. Right now, there’s a couple of feet of snow on the ground so nicely chilled whites may seem inappropriate. They’re working for yours truly because they suit my mood of late — cool and light. I dropped some emotional burdens and am slowly getting rid of some physical ones. To that end, the tree and wreath are up. I am also heady with excitement for my other Christmas gift to me — a trip to see the Devils play the Caps at The Phone Booth. This game is meaningful beyond my usual devotion to my beloved Devils since the teams are neck and neck for the conference lead. I had very low expectations for my Satanic Mechanics this year. Happily, my lack of faith was misplaced. So Merry Christmas to all who do that particular observance and Happy Holidays for those who have either finished  with or are prepping for other fetes.

Wine Blogging Wednesday #63: 2007 Can Blau time trial

November 18, 2009

Thanks to the man who mans Wine Post, our Wine Blogging Wednesday assignment for this month was to revisit a favorite and then write the post in twice the amount of time it took you to enjoy the wine. My pick was the 2007 Can Blau from the Montsant region of Spain. I love this wine for it elegance, richness and price (around $14 everywhere except where the Negress lives in Maryland). I opened the bottle at about 5 p.m. on Monday, retrieved one of my better Spiegelau glasses from the hutch and poured Glass No. 1 at 5:05. After preparing  Trader Joe’s vegetable samosas, I sat down with the wine and the food and started to enjoy. The samosas vanished quickly and I poured another glass, noting how nicely the blend of Carinena, Syrah and Garnacha played off the spiciness of the samosas. With the second glass, I started to notice the deep notes of blackberry and black cherry on the palate. The wine is made by Australian Liz Reed and Catalan winemaker Ricard Rofes. The Montsant region wraps around Priorat  like a horseshoe, and offer wines of similar body to its pricey neighbor but at a much more agreeable price. I first heard about this wine from the Cervantes Institute master of Spanish wines Helio San Miguel. Miguel offered a tasting  at the New York cultural center where all of the wines were made by female winemakers. I’ve been in love with it ever since. However, the third glass was not the charm during this time tasting. I got slightly woozy but finished the glass by 7 p.m. I really did finish the glass since when I went to the sink to wash it out I managed to break it but contained the fragments to the sink. Thank Heaven Spiegelau replacements are fairly easy to find. I have about a half bottle of the Can Blau left. It was my last bottle so I would like to get another case to be on the safe side.

Wine Blogging Wednesday #58: Music and Wine

June 12, 2009

The babes over at Gonzo Gastronomy probably won’t mind that this post is a bit late but the Negress will bring it to their extremely wandering attention. This is an easy task since the best wine does play melodies in your mouth. Think of the fruit as a soaring melody, a bit of oak as a percussive accent and the balance of acid and tannin as the skilled hand of the orchestra’s conductor. If the melody becomes overpowering, you have cloyingly cheap sentiment. Too much percussion and there’s a headache coming because you can’t hear anything else. If one section of the orchestra sticks out, the conductor is clearly not paying attention.

OK. The writer and the metaphor are exhausted. While the Negress loves contemporary composers and the work of the American Composers Orchestra, recent events have persuaded her that her wine needs to rock. No, we’re not talking a lot of minerals on the palate. We’re talking leather pants, drinking too much, singing loudly and thrusting a lighter (or a cell phone if you’re younger than the Negress) into the air. To celebrate her ongoing obsession with the LA band Airborne Toxic Event (all Don DeLillo fans are permitted to smile here), the Negress cracked a bottle of 2004 Trentadue Petit Sirah. Before that, she been keeping time with docile, agreeable whites, the kind of wines you bring home to Mother. The Trentadue is as mannered as Mikel Jollet’s writing, but you could easily see it drinking too much and calling you too late. The worst part is, you would answer the call, put on clothes, and head over there even though you know better. Petit Sirah is an indie rock kind of wine, shyly staring at the stage, leaving the bravura to emo and metal. But, like the Shins, a good Petit Sirah can change your life.

While the Trentadue is excellent company, we stocked our wine equivalent of our Ipod with some different kinds of tunes. We have some 2005 Bordeaux waiting for the end of the world, and we swore we would not buy more wine since we are moving in a couple of months. But our favorite wine store only had two bottles of this insanely fabulous wine from Montsant made by a girl winemaker, 2007 Can Blau, which reminds us of Elvis Costello and XTC for its spiky smarts. We have the six years of the Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, which is like having a Metallica boxed set (Metallica is the perfect metaphor for Cali cabs. Big stuff, no?), some Chilean and Argentinian favorites including a Sauvignon Blanc where part of the sales prices goes to health care for the vineyard workers. In my everyday life, I can’t live without Calle 13 (all right, ellos son de Boricua, not South America) so having some everyday wine with a Spanish accent seems righteous.

Other things have happened in the month since the last WBW and we’ll have posted about all of them by Monday.
