The shoulder is doing well thanks. Philly has all the ingredients for a great local scene -- college audience, people who love music. I suspect it's the geography of the place and the fact that some of the midsize venues are all in the suburbs, which are not easy or cheap to get to from where the schools. Also, Philly is still a rich incubator for black music so it does make you wonder. Perhaps the Hooters guys could open a club?

Oh, sweetie: I hope your shoulder heals quickly. Glad to know that you had such a good time in Philadelphia. I've spent a lot of time there, and am often puzzled by the lack of a great local music scene. Of course Philadelphia has produced some staggeringly great talent, but there's no great indie music scene there. Weird, no? I hope all is well. xo

You may be familiar with my familiarity with Alboriño and Torrontes, and perhaps you're unfamiliar with my unfamiliarity with Viura. Now that you've injected the V varietal into my medial cigulate process twice in the past thrice posts, it seems fair to reverse that unfamiliarity in at least one direction. So 'scuse me whilst I unplug and get to the nearest wine emporium.
Unless you know of a white summer-philic grape that starts with M. (Image-changing math left as an exercise for the reader; hint: no dirt involved).

You may have this recipe:
1 4 lb. Thick chuck roast
1 pkg onion soup mix
1 32 oz. Can diced tomatoes
6 - 8 cloves garlic, smashed
1 - 2 cups red wine or more
1 - 2 pkg mushrooms
Season salt, Italian seasoning, pepper

Preheat oven to 325 degrees.

Season roast to taste with salt, pepper and it's in seasoning. Adjust for salt in the onion soup mix. Slice, quarter or half mushrooms and add. Toss in smashed garlic. Garlic fans can sliver the garlic and poke it Ito the roast (use a bit less, if you do this). Pour tomatoes over meat, spreading evenly.

Cook samples the wine! Thin bodied red -use a bit more, heavier body - use a bit less. Pour wine slowly over roast spas not to displace the tomatoes.

Cook for 2 1/2 hous or unti fork tender. Serve over rice or noodles.

Like your meandering stream of consciousness post. I relate to the focus dilemma. I have a problem with being put in a box, when a cause or belief becomes a defining factor of how I am seen in the world. Long running dilemma that results in a bit of resentment and being noncommittal. Found your site when I googled the Silverado Merlot. Liked the wine a lot. Great with chuck roast braised in my fave wine/onion/ mushroom sauce.

Oh, Claudia,

I'm so sorry to hear this. May 22 will be the anniversary of my mom's passing 7 years ago (7 years?) in 2004. Wow.

It will hover over you, but the stunned feeling will, thankfully, pass. Hugs to you!
